THE STORY OF MOSES CONTINUES...
Moses grew up living with his adopted mother, a princess of Egypt.
Moses knew that he was a Hebrew, not an Egyptian.
He used to visit his people and he saw how hard they had to work as slaves.
One day, when Moses was 40 years old, he saw an Egyptian kill a Hebrew man. Then Moses killed the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand.
Moses thought that no one had seen what he did. Even if that was true, God sees EVERYTHING!
The very next day Moses saw two Hebrew men fighting.
He said to one of them, “Why are you beating up a fellow Hebrew?”
The man said, “Who made you the boss? Are you going to kill me like the Egyptian you killed yesterday?”
That made Moses scared! People did know what he had done. And then the king heard about it and tried to get Moses killed. Moses ran away from Egypt. He kept going for about 2 to 3 weeks until he arrived in the land of Midian (This is called Saudi Arabia today - can you find it on the map?)
In Midian, a man called Jethro had seven daughters who looked after his sheep and goats. They would bring the animals to a well and give them water, but often they would get hassled by the other shepherds at the well. One day, Moses was nearby and he saw what was happening so he rescued them. Jethro invited Moses to dinner to thank him. Moses decided to stay in that place. He married Zipporah, one of the daughters, and helped look after the sheep and goats belonging to his father-in-law.
Forty more years went by. Even though there was a new king in Egypt, the Hebrew people were still suffering as slaves. They asked God for help.
It says in Exodus chapter 2 verse 23 … their cry went up to God ….
Moses saw something strange one day while he was doing his job of caring for the animals. A bush was on fire but it wasn’t burning up. He went over to check it out. And then he heard a voice calling his name … from the middle of the bush! It was GOD!
God had chosen Moses to be the one to rescue the Hebrew people from being slaves in Egypt.
Moses said, “I am nobody. How can I go to the king and bring the Israelites (Hebrews) out of Egypt?”
And God answered, “I WILL BE WITH YOU…”
More of the story of Moses next week!
Something to think about:
God doesn’t promise to take away our problems, but he does promise to be with us and to help us
Have Some Fun!
You could watch the movie ‘Prince of Egypt’ to see what happens in this story - just remember it’s a movie so it might not be exactly the same as the story in the Bible
