THE STORY OF MOSES : EXODUS 2
Some background that will help:
Joseph and his brothers and their families lived in Egypt and were called Hebrews.
After a very long time there were lots of Hebrews living in Egypt.
The king at that time was worried that there were too many Hebrews, so he made them into slaves.
Then the king said that all the baby boys should be killed!
Moses is born:
Amram and Jochebed already had 2 children, Miriam and Aaron, when their new baby was born. He was a boy. They didn’t want him to be killed, so they kept him hidden for 3 months. That must have been tricky!
By the time he was 3 months old, they couldn’t keep him hidden any longer.
What were they going to do?
Jochebed had a basket made out of reeds that she covered with tar to make it watertight. She put the baby in the basket and put the basket in the river. Miriam hid nearby to see what would happen.
What happened?
The princess came for a swim in the river. She saw the basket and asked one of her servants to get it. She opened the basket and saw the baby. She knew he was a Hebrew baby and that her father, the king, had ordered that the baby boys were to be killed. But he was crying and she felt sorry for him.
Then Miriam did a very brave thing. She came up to the princess and said, “Shall I go and call a Hebrew woman to feed the baby for you?”
The princess said, “Yes, please.”
I’m sure you can guess who Miriam called to come and feed the baby - their mother, Jochebed!
The princess said, “Take this baby and feed him for me, and I will pay you.”
Wow, that’s amazing!
The princess decided to call the baby MOSES and when he was old enough he went to live with her and she adopted him as her son.
